Have a careful think about how you can improve your life, and the lives of people you interact with, in the light of this quote.

Quotes can be very useful personal development and life enrichment ‘tools’. I like to learn about the people behind quotes too (I am a Philosopher after all).

William Penn was an interesting early ‘American’. We can learn much from these ‘sages’ of old. In fact smart people learn as much as they can from people who have gone before them.

William Penn (October 14, 1644 – July 30, 1718) was an English real estate entrepreneur, philosopher, and founder and “absolute proprietor” of the Province of Pennsylvania, the English North American colony and the future U. Under his direction, the city of Philadelphia was planned and developed.

I am stupid!

If there is one thing I know that I, myself, am, it is that I know that I am stupid!

Knowing that I am stupid is one of the most valuable teachers that I have.

Knowing that I am stupid causes me to accept correction when I am wrong.

Knowing that I’m stupid causes me to take new and improved actions when my actions turn out to be unproductive.

Knowing that I’m stupid makes me seek knowledge, find that knowledge, and put it to work on my behalf and the behalf of others.

Knowing that I’m stupid is the perfect excuse to strike up a conversation with Wisdom, and Wisdom doesn’t need to make me humble first.

Knowing that I’m stupid makes me test what does and does not work, causing me to do what works, because I know that I am stupid enough to do what doesn’t work.

Knowing that I’m stupid causes me to embrace change, because I know, as stupid as I am, many improvements and changes must be made.

Knowing that I’m stupid causes me to work the percentages, because I know I’m not smart enough to make a sale from everyone I come in contact with.

I love the freedom of being stupid, because it allows me to make many comparisons, gather much data, and put two and two together all over the place.

I love being stupid, because I am constantly learning from my mistakes.

I am so courageous in my stupidity that I go out on a limb, unafraid to make mistakes, because I know that the new information that comes in will be smarter than me.

Dictionaries define wisdom as follows:

1. The ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting; insight.

2. Common sense; good judgment: “It is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things” (Henry David Thoreau).

3.a. The sum of learning through the ages; knowledge: “In those homely sayings was couched the collective wisdom of generations” (Maya Angelou)

3.b. Wise teachings of the ancient sages.

4. A wise outlook, plan, or course of action.

5. Wisdom Bible. Wisdom of Solomon.

The Bible goes further stating: “For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.” Proverbs 8 v11.

Now, I am not “religious”; rather – spiritual – and have learned from deep and personal experience that wisdom is indeed the most valuable thing one can obtain.

Hanging on to my own opinion can be a hindrance and at times even worse; so I also have learned to love truth and a humble mindset.

I love things that work and I am sure you do too. Like you, I have no time for fancy theories, waffle or half baked stuff.

Because I had an extremely bad start in life due to very poor parenting; which resulted in severe emotional, spiritual and psychological problems; as a child, teenager and young man my life was one big mess. Being a bit deaf*, highly intelligent, well educated, intuitive about people and their real motives, as well as sensitive only made things worse. (*And yes, I got called “four ears”, spastic too).

In my 20′s I started the process of fixing myself and my life – whilst it wasn’t my fault I was in such a mess, it was my responsibility to fix it.

I soon found out that I could find very few people that could help someone with the severity of my problems; and those that could were only able to assist with parts**. (**Special thanks to Grace Hayward and Val Beale).

Simply speaking, I had to find solutions that worked, lasted and that few seemed to know anything about. I experienced the loneliness of the pioneer. I studied the mind and “how people tick” as a matter of life and death.

Fortunately for me, (and others I have helped since) I found solutions and am now a very happy, calm, contented person. Whilst I would never want to go through what I suffered again, I am now very grateful I had the experience because without it I would not be who I am today, nor have the knowledge & wisdom that goes with it.

Years ago, when I did some Army training (British) I noticed that combat/operations veterans had a significant edge over those who had not been through the experience. I have great respect for learning, academic institutions and learned individuals, however nothing can take the place of experience. Whilst I had an excellent initial education at one of the finest schools in the world (Rugby School, England), and then much later gained a degree in Counselling and a Philosophy Ph.D; I credit my practical life experience with the most importance.

Lateral thinking is second nature to me, as is the big picture with a key focus on facts and results. If something is worth doing then it should be done well. Helping people is a passion and joy to me and before I leave this world I want to ensure as many people benefit from my experience as possible.

The Reality behind the Law of Attraction

Life has many different laws which govern how things work out. To add to the confusion, one law can override another. Let me give an example from the field of physics. We all know that gravity means that a thin metal tube will stay on the ground. And by the way; the law of gravity works whether we believe in it or not. When we stick two wings and an engine on the metal tube we have of course; an aircraft. The aircraft uses the law of lift to help it overcome the law of gravity.

The recent successes of books like The Secret and The Law of Attraction are due in part to peoples’ thirst for knowledge about laws which govern us humans. Unfortunately, many people also misunderstand how to practice these laws. Some have misconstrued the general message of these books and have led themselves to believe that they simply have to sit back, relax, and think about what they want with their lives.

The Law of Attraction can only be put to good use with action on our part. I know that the universe works with us when we strive to achieve all our dreams. But, it can only nudge destiny towards our way. The rest is up to us, whether we choose to meet it halfway or not. After all, no one rewards the lazy.

If we made an inventory of all the successful individuals in this world, we would realize that each of them went through hell and high water just to be where they are today. Whoever said that the path to success was easy couldn’t have been further from the truth. In reality, to reach our goal, we’ll have to ready ourselves to overcome hurdles along the way. In one way, it is now simply a question of how badly we want our dreams to become reality.

Our paths can sometimes, metaphorically speaking, be full of ruts, cracks and pot holes. Sometimes we will stumble along the way. We court failure when we have the kind of self-defeating attitude that leads us to believe that the more we fall, the harder it will be be to get back up. This is a shortcut to sabotaging our dreams. It’s when we shift our focus to become pessimistic that we doom ourselves to failure.

Instead of thinking of what we don’t want to happen, we should think of what we do want. Putting words like don’t or no in our statement is an indication of where our focus is, and that is in the negative. On the other hand, if we make claims about things that we yet have to achieve, this can also be seen as a lie. Positive thinking is based on the belief we WILL get what we want and that we are in the process of fulfilling our dreams. We’ve all heard of the term self-fulfilling prophecy. We need to believe that good things will come to us because we’ve already started to fashion our lives and thinking according to our personal desires.

This article, in no way, claims that success can only be measured through our monetary achievement. Winning comes in many forms and in every aspect of our lives. Be it with our personal or career paths, we can only truly say that we’ve won if, at the end of the day, we go to sleep with a happy, content heart with a clear conscience.

We truly have to understand what the Law Of Attraction is.

Simply put, it is accepting the fact that we can do what we want and that anything is possible if we work at it. Something good can happen to us today and the miracle is already set to unfold if we open the doors to opportunities.

Simple life Wisdom.

Simple life Wisdom is all around us if we care, or dare, to listen and take notice.

For example:

“Moderation is the key-note of lasting enjoyment.”

Hosea Ballou: American clergyman & theological writer.

I expect you will remember, and have personally experienced, one of the most obvious examples of this – connected with food and eating. The first few bites are usually the best. I have heard that people who work in Chocolate factories, and who are allowed to eat as much free Chocolate as they like at work, tend to get ‘sick of it’ rather quickly, and permanently.

What Mr Ballou has commented on is a key, immovable law of the Universe/Cosmos. Whether we like it or not, we cannot avoid these laws. It is far smarter then, to work with them.

The above is the ‘proof’ in the sense that most people will realize that it is correct. It is so logical and easy to understand.

So, what other areas in your life, besides food, are you not handling with moderation?

Binge drinking perhaps?

Too much work?

Obsessive thinking?

Insufficient sleep (very bad for health, life expectancy and weight)?

A lack of moderation can be spoken of metaphorically as poison.

Beware of quasi wisdom

Earlier this month I wrote an article about the use of quotes as a tool in personal development.

It is important to beware of quasi wisdom based on either poor quality quotes, or misinterpretation of quotes. Misinterpretation bears a striking resemblance to the problem with a lot of church denominations believing different things about the same Bible verse. They can’t all be right, yet are quite fanatical in the view that their interpretation is the correct one.

Here is an example of what I mean:

If we look at the quote:

“You can tell more about a person by what he says about others than you can by what others say about him“. ~Leo Aikman

Many agree with this quote, yet when you consider the likes of Adolf Hitler, Idi Amin, Nero and other despots through the ages it is obvious that this quote is not correct. And obviously, there are various shades of evil in between these people and the “everyday people” that we know. At what point does our censure of them cease to be correct and become a value judgement on our own character?

And what of those people, some of them seasoned Police officers, who have a sense, or hunch, that someone is an especially “bad egg” – despite the “bad egg” being lauded by society at large? We know the ending – so many of these so called “lovely people” being hauled off to prison for kiddie fiddling or some other serious crime.

And then there is the situation where a background investigation reveals a great deal about a person based on what others say about him. Yet, in person the subject comes across as very pleasant with never a bad word to say about anyone. Many con men are like this.

In fact, key aspects of our society are based on referrals and references from others. Jobs, shopping. We often listen to people we know when asking about a dodgy mechanic for example.

And what of those dear souls who really are able to see into the deep within others and issue appropriate warnings?

Of course, this quote does have some elements of truth in it. There is indeed a lot you can tell about someone by the way he or she talks about others, but it can take wisdom to know the difference. And masters of deception can appear to say nice things about people, yet actually be “turning the screw” – most people don’t notice. My mother and father were like this, though mum was better at it – she often tried to pollute my mind or memories with her lies about situations and people, yet she came across all sickly sweet and charming. Anyone without insight would have been easily taken in.

One of the problems with quotes is that people can take them as “fact” and beat up on themselves when they fail at life, according to the quote. We need to have a balanced view supported by critical thinking processes. Don’t just assume a belief or idea is true – think about it first. It helps to take the simple approach and often is a good idea to test the idea against an extreme; such as I did with the Adolf Hitler example above; or a key facet of everyday life such as references and referrals.

My last blog post was about how you can use quotations for personal development. In the post I mentioned the need to obtain wisdom.

Since writing the post I came across this video – it is short, to the point, humorous and some might consider it politically incorrect (who needs more politicians).

Hopefully you will get something out of it and not get hung up on the bluntness etc.
