Recently I mentioned that my blog is being redeveloped.

Yesterday I started phase one of the blog theme change. All is going well, however I am not yet finished.

My choice for new Theme – Da Vinci by Solostream – has proven excellent.

In the past I have tried/reviewed a good variety of premium business WordPress themes from key developers such as Thesis, iThemes, Frugal/Catalyst, Elegant Themes, OneTheme, StudioPress, Socrates, Solostream and more.

Da Vinci is the best theme I have ever used, reviewed or tested. It’s easy to use, quick to deploy, has great functionality, well thought out design and very good aesthetics: attractive, modern, soothing, easy to read, professional.

My new site is not yet fully functional and I aim to finish it by Sunday 13th. I have a lot of things to do this weekend, including looking after client needs (which are more important than configuring my blog), so cannot get it all done right away.

Once I have completed my theme change, my next web design project is to import all the content from my Joy Wizard website as pages – they will appear in the top link bar – the one starting with Home. When I have finished importing content I will delete the Joy Wizard dot net website and redirect the domain name so that anyone going there will come here instead. I am looking forward to only having to focus on one website and am sure visitors will appreciate it too.

When all is done, I will be able to focus on what I love best, which is producing content. Besides written articles I will be creating video. Da Vinci is ideal for showcasing visual media. Check out the demo site to get an idea – go to the Solostream site, click on Da Vinci theme, and then on the link for the demo version.

Thank you for your patience while I go through this process.

The WordPress theme I use for this blog-website is about to change.

In recent times, I have been using Frugal.

Frugal has been a good theme, though it did take a lot of work to get it configured just right. There are key elements of the design which I like a lot, however it is somewhat limited.

I finished configuring my Frugal install last year, at around the same time as I discovered that Frugal was to be discontinued and a new theme released instead. I was especially disappointed to read something along the lines that support for Frugal would end after about a year.

Despite having the option of a free upgrade to the replacement for Frugal – Catalyst – I decided to change back to a Solostream theme. I say “back”, because I have used Solostream themes for some years, for various projects. Solostream themes are my favorite for a number of reasons.

Besides being excellent value for a premium business WordPress theme, Solostream themes are well designed, easy to configure and work well. Support is very good. I like the look of them too – aesthetics are important. I especially like the look and functionality of the Da Vinci WordPress theme.

Check out the Solostream Da Vinci theme here.

I will kick off the theme change today. Please bear in mind that parts of my website might not work correctly for a short while as I implement the theme change.

Note: Catalyst is an excellent WordPress blog theme. It has very significant and innovative configuration options and is one of my top recommendations for a WordPress theme.

Ok, I will keep this simple. Read it all though as it might save you money, time, stress and hassle.

Just what you REALLY need to know about Content Management Systems (CMS) for Web Design, Web Developers and Websites.

A Content Management System can be a fancy name for a website (or blog). Content Managed Websites is another name for them.

I say “can be” because a CMS has a number of definitions, not all to do with websites.

Many web designers and developers push the idea.

One reason is that using a CMS for a website is a sound idea.

For you. AND for them.

A CMS is a good idea because non technical users can be easily shown how to create their own web pages using just a web browser – no special software or high technical skills required. It can be like using a word processor in a basic way (Word or similar).

Steps:

Web developer creates website using a CMS. This stage can be tricky and is generally best left to the professionals or technically competent/knowledgeable people.

Web developer shows client how to log in via a browser and add or change pages. Easy.

Client continues to update, change, remove or add web pages and web developer is not required. Cruisey.

Sounds good huh?

Yes, it is. To a degree.

Now we come to what you really need to know.

Would you build your house with bad foundations?

And would you pay much more money than you need to? On an ongoing basis too?

Here’s the catch. Now, it does not apply to every situation or web developer out there; but you want to be sure it is not happening to you – don’t you?

Cost steps and considerations:

You pay the web developer to build your website. Sometimes significant work is involved – in some cases the work is minimal. Situations vary. You simply pay to get your site built.

A website requires hosting. This can be problem area number one. Do you really know what you are getting and what you should be getting? For example; websites directed at a primarily Australian audience should usually be hosted in Australia (except in special circumstances beyond the scope of this article). Your web designer might provide hosting (for a fee), BUT: is it the best for you and your site? And is it too expensive? Perhaps it is ‘included’ in a bundle price such as cost for hosting and use of CMS. These are just SOME of the questions you need to be asking. (Some questions are technical and I have kept this simple).

Use of CMS – some web designers charge you a monthly or yearly fee to use the CMS. This can be bundled with the hosting fee at times. To some extent this can cover ‘maintenance’ of the CMS, however the work involved in maintenance can be minimal and your monthly payment can represent a large amount of wasted money – year after year.

Some CMS are technically difficult and costly to move, should you need to change web host and/or web developer in the future. Some are even proprietary (or bits can be). You can get in a real jam down the track. Difficulties in changing can adversely affect your SEO (Search Engine Optimization). If problems arise you could have huge bills.

Some CMS are technically hard to work with which can create upward pressure on costs and scarcity of competency.

Do you honestly think most web developers are going to genuinely consider your interests; especially your long term ones? You need to find out at the START what is best for YOU. Get your foundations right. Don’t fall for slick marketing spiel, or appeals to take what seems to be ‘the easy road’.

So what should you do?

Be careful when seeking a web developer. (There are loads of other reasons besides the above).

Start with finding out what you really need for YOUR needs. Bear in mind that you cannot really expect the guy with 26 fridge models in stock to try to sell you a model he does not have available, but which is far better for you. Same goes for most web designers.

Split the process and analysis into component elements. 1) Domain name registration 2) Hosting, 3) Website design (CMS or one other excellent solution – will cover that later), 4) Ongoing support needs

More detail on the component elements:

1. Domain name registration.

If you have not already got your domain name and want to buy one, do not assume you have to host with the same company. It may be a good idea, but not always. I recommend registering the domain name yourself. I have heard too many stories about people who thought they owned a domain name (having paid for it) only to find that it was actually registered in the name of a web developer and….you guessed….things went bad and the problems started. Believe me, if you do not have control of a domain name it can cost you HUGELY.

For Australian domain names I recommend VentraIP. Good prices, good value, reliable, slick, organized, quality – all the good stuff. I also recommend them for Australian web hosting.

For non Australian domain names and international web hosting I recommend Go Daddy. Like the previous example – good prices, good value, reliable, slick, organized, quality – all the good stuff. In fact, Go Daddy have even better value and customer focus than NetRegistry. I use GoDaddy for some of my hosting, however my sites are directed at an international audience, as well as Australian. You might notice that Go Daddy web hosting is cheaper than NetRegistry, and the features better; however if you have an Aussie website directed at Australians don’t be a cheapskate – having foreign web hosting will cost you in other ways (remember – I said I would keep this simple).

Remember to ask yourself this:

Do I want my web designer to provide my domain name, my web hosting, my website and the ongoing maintenance. Hey, maybe some SEO as well? Just think of all that control. I know it seems easy – a bit like going to the big supermarkets in a way – but is it sound? In some cases (simple brakes are on) wise people register domains in one place and host in another (but I will keep it simple and won’t go into why).

Before we go on….

Has your web designer told you any of this? Why not?

2. Hosting

See comments under ‘Domain name registration’ above.

3. Website design

Getting this decision right starts with the foundation. Here are my two suggestions:

a) CMS. If you want a CMS, use WordPress (the .org self hosted version – not WordPress.com – there are good reasons for not using the latter; beyond the scope of this article).

Make sure that your web designer uses WordPress. Besides being easy for you to update, remove or add pages/posts here are just some of the other reasons:

WordPress is the ‘gold standard’ CMS.

WordPress is common, popular and extremely well supported. Finding people to help you will not be hard.

WordPress installs are quite easy to move.

WordPress is free.

Excellent themes (ready made designs) are available. The one for this blog for example costs USD $79. Look for WP-MediaMag by Solostream here. Support from my theme developer Solostream is excellent.

WordPress has a huge amount of excellent plugins, most of which are free. Just one example is WordPress Mobile Edition. This free plugin “enhances your site’s interface for visitors using a mobile device. By automatically detecting mobile browsers, this plugin gives your blog a mobile/phone/PDA- friendly interface with progressive enhancement for advanced mobile browsers”. Take a look at my/this blog on your iPhone or similar device. You cannot afford not to have a mobile friendly version of your site today – this will become increasingly important in the future.

WordPress is quite easy to learn.

WordPress is slick and easy to use.

You can use WordPress for a static website or blog. It is not just for blogging. That said, you really should be blogging – either with a separate blog or one combined with a website.

Please note that with a WordPress self hosted website/blog, there will be periodic technical maintenance required. That said, it is not usually a lot.

b) Website building software. If you want a powerful, and I mean powerful, easy to use (Approx 2 hour tutorial will have you building a website) non CMS conventional website builder, then I recommend XSitePro. Either use it yourself, or ensure that your web designer does.

Forget Expression Web, FrontPage, (both Microsoft) or Dreamweaver. Take time to review the XSitePro website and you will start to see why. Frankly, I consider the thinking behind XSitePro to be so good that it bears the marks of genius.

And ask yourself:

Why is XSitePro website building software so popular with Internet Marketers?

What do they know that many of us don’t?

What could I be missing?

One of the big negatives about XSitePro – if you are a web designer – is that it can do you out of a job!

Simply speaking, XSitePro enables you to easily add pages just like using a word processor. Sure, creating a website is more involved (but still easy), however you can always get your web developer to build it for you. The resulting single export file can then be imported easily into your copy of XSitePro, complete with publishing passwords etc and you are good to go for adding pages etc. It is very easy/cruisey.

Free support for the website building software is superb.

And the price? Currently $197 USD! For elite level software!

I built my website (plus many others of my own and belonging to clients) using XSitePro.

Check out my website here: http://www.joywizard.net

Simple ‘prescription’:

Buy your own copy of XSitePro

Either build your own website or get someone to help you.

Once site is built, import into your copy of XSitePro (if someone else built it for you) and start adding your own pages.

Purchase a .mobi domain and point it to the special mobile device website that XSite pro creates. (Optional).

Here’s a cost saving tip: if you use XSitePro and want a site with loads of pages, then you can save money by paying a web designer to build the base website with just a few pages. Then you, or your staff, can add hundreds of pages easily without need of a designer.

PS: Spend the money you save on getting good ongoing search engine optimization (SEO). This is not all done during the site build stage.

Maintaining XSitePro is easy – it has a self updater.

4. Ongoing support needs

Periodic technical maintenance is required for WordPress self hosted websites/blogs. This is not usually significant and can be handled by technically competent non web developers if necessary.

XSitePro has a self updater (via button) and is easy to update. No hosting account access is required so even your grandmother could do it.

Conclusion

If you have ANY questions at all, please do get in touch. There is plenty more that you need to find out about building websites/blogs (and are probably not being told).

If you would like to find out more about how I can help you with building your website or blog please let me know. As you have probably realised by now, my focus is upon genuinely helping customers and focusing on what is best for them.

WordPress 3.0 “Thelonious” has been released.

It looks fantastic.

Personally, I will wait a week or so (or more) before I upgrade.

Here are some of my reasons:

Allowing time to pass so that I can be sure there are no major hassles or issues with the new release.

Allowing the plugin developers to update their code. Some may be lagging behind.

I host with Go Daddy. They have a special button within the hosting control panel for upgrading. This button does not appear for at least some days after every WordPress code upgrade. I understand the reason for this is to be certain the release is stable before installing. (Note: By using the Go Daddy button for upgrading, rather than the one built into WordPress, it means that if anything goes wrong then I would get more help from Go Daddy to fix – because it is their system).

I can view feedback on other people’s experiences with the new WordPress version. I expect there will be some great articles produced. These often mean that I can conduct my upgrade and configuration accordingly – thus benefiting from better knowledge.

My blog theme will be upgraded/updated by the developer

Key tips:

BACK UP your files before upgrading

Update your plugins before upgrading – and make sure that you refresh the plugin page to check for more updates – they may not all be visible on first look.

Use MyResume WordPress theme to promote yourself -create professional, sophisticated online presence. The My Resume theme has just been released.

Why be like everyone else using those dry looking paper resumes? Yawn. Even the fancy ones cannot compare with a well constructed web based resume or curriculum vitae (CV).

Web based resumes catch the eye of employers, demonstrate initiative and make life easier for your customer – the potential employer.

Personally, I have not used any of these themes for blogs, however may do in future. I am impressed with the range, quality, support and inexpensive cost. In my view, Elegant Themes is one of the ‘hidden gems’ of the WordPress blog theme world.

Premium blog themes without the premium price.

As part of my Life Coaching practice I help people with web based resumes at times (I build websites for people too). One example:

Job search better than other people.

Here is an article featuring the use of business cards for job search. Yes, business cards!

Do we understand each other?

It is all very well to write stuff, but another matter to be understood. Properly understood.

I try to make sure that I write in a way which is understood properly by most people. I try to steer clear of ambiguity too. One of my shortcomings, which I am working on, is that I have an inherent tendency to write in a way which can resemble a dissertation. Ouch! Another big word! This is one reason why some of my writing is an unusual mixture of technical and conversational (colloquial) styles – informal and formal – reverent and irreverent. Another reason is my personality, which is multi facetted and at home with the broad spectrum of society from street people to the upper echelons (toffs?).

The bottom line is that I want to help people, and to do that I need to be understood. This means I write in a way which not all would consider to be professional, but the reality is it’s calculated and purposeful. Often, and increasingly, I write in laid back language which resembles a conversation with the reader.

One technique I use when I write is to think about how I would sound if I said it. Sometimes I read things out loud and if it doesn’t sound right I change it. I do put a lot of effort into thinking about how best to communicate a concept (sorry, an idea). At times I use methods which are not strictly grammatically correct because it makes the copy (what I am writing) flow better. And one of my dark secrets is that I have forgotten a lot of the formalized stuff I was supposed to have learnt at skool about grammar – I tend to write more intuitively from a perspective of being well read; therefore knowing instinctively how to put stuff together. Words to me are a creative thing. An art form even. Words have energy, power and life. But here we are also slipping into another topic.

In case you are wondering, I tend to use American spellings these days – partly because I spend so much time using American applications (software/websites) and communicating with Americans, but also because of search engine optimization (SEO). A classic example is the word counselor (American) and counsellor (UK and Australian/NZ) – if people are typing counselor (into a search engine) then they will miss me if I just use counsellor. Because the American market is so large, and an important part of my customer base, I have to optimize what I write accordingly. That said, I also have to attract Australian readers/customers who use the word counsellor. These dual or American spellings can sometimes seem odd to readers, depending on their perspective, however to reach the broadest audience they are necessary. I expect some people think I can’t spell and didn’t do well at skewl.

As you can see from the above, what I write is also written from the perspective of search engines – in a way; writing stuff is quite a complicated business! And funnily enough – writing about the counselor – counsellor issue in this article will help with the search engines! (Though it wasn’t deliberate! – just a side effect).

I have also noticed a difference in the way I write when I type and when I use dictation software , speaking directly into the computer. I have not researched the issue, however suspect that it has to do with the brain working in a different way when typing or speaking. I know writing stuff out by hand can have a different effect on the brain. Thankfully, you will never see my handwriting – I put many Doctors to shame! (I am always shocked when I see poor doctor’s handwriting – one would think that in such important matters as scripts for example that they would make more of an effort to communicate clearly and ensure people get the right medicine).

Dictation software is a huge productivity driver – if you want to save time writing then check it out here.

Bye for now!

Note: I have used Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred for years. The manufacturer’s site is here. You can buy direct from the manufacturer, or from Amazon by clicking on the link below. (Hint: you will probably get a better price from Amazon).

****** Start of Facebook post ******

Hmm…my Facebook fan page , which I created yesterday, is not importing blog posts properly. Looking into it.

Facebook is in some respects a ‘cussed’ application – counter intuitive, works in strange ways, feels like it has been thrown together and so on. I am not alone in my thoughts, having come across significant numbers of business people & geeks who find these aspects of FB frustrating.

I often have to do Google searches to find a solution to issues or how to do something.

There are of course a whole host of positives about FB and I am very grateful for them. It would be nice however if FB adhered to basic usability principles advocated in “Don’t Make Me Think” by Steve Krug - the ‘Bible” of web usability.

Duh.

****** End of Facebook post ******

I wrote the above on my Facebook profile – or rather; tried to.

Not having been in the habit of writing long Facebook posts I was surprised to receive a message stating:

Status Too Long

Your status update is too long. The maximum status length is 420 characters, but it is 672 characters long.

So……I had to write a blog post instead…..and publish that to Facebook.

I rest my case.

******

Ugh…spoke too soon….

While finishing off this post I decided to see if I could get a memorable web address for my Facebook Fan Page, instead of the huge long thing I have currently. Yesterday, I found a Facebook FAQ which states that a Fan Page must have 25 fans before it is eligible for a short special name; however – this evening I noticed something which led me to believe that such a short address was indeed available via a special application.

Did you guess?

I followed all the fiddly steps and arrived at this message:

Memorable Web Addresses for Profile, Page or Group

The developer of this application does not currently allow it to be added.

Moronic huh? Not to mention a huge time waster.

Yesterday, I noticed a facility for creating a Fan Page badge and thought it would be good to place one here. I had trouble finding it again today (wasted more time) , however here is the badge (PS: I had to edit some of the html code so that it would work the way I want):

Up until recently I have been using Bit.ly for my link shortening.

For some time now I have had the impression that Bit.ly is not tracking clicks properly and have been busy testing http://su.pr/ which is part of StumbleUpon.

Recently, at Bit.ly, my click figures have gone right down – sometimes just 1 or 2 clicks. I know that this is incorrect.

When I pumped out my first link via Su.pr it had over 20 clicks quickly. It has been ages since a Bit.ly link showed that many….

I like Su.pr much better than Bit.ly.

It has scheduled Tweets, time tracking of clicks and appears to be reliable.

I could not get the Su.pr WordPress plug in to work however and the help files were poor. As a workaround I just click view post (WordPress button) after publishing, then the Su.pr bookmarklet in my links toolbar once the page has opened. I shorten and add #hashtags if needed (which is easier than via BitLy/Wordpress combo because I can see how many characters are left).

Stumbling aspect is good too.

I suspect that this app is unlikely to close down/go out of business (being part of Stumbleupon), or at least less likely than some of the others (Which would mean broken links).

Su.pr has increased the enjoyability factor of posting links which will mean more value for people following my Twitter stream too.

I like things that work.

Addendum, 18 March 2010

Cannot rely on Twitter account @ list to show all RTs. Have been finding RTs via SU.pr link shortener that never appeared in my Twitter account @ list. Had I not been using SU.pr, I would never have known about them and therefore not been able to thank the people concerned.

SU.pr has also revealed people copying my Tweets word for word with no RT/mention of my handle; so the tweet appears to originate from them. Naughty!

I have heard from what I believe to be a reliable source, that Twitter uses Bit.ly for internal link processing – in context of that possibly being behind the misreporting of RTs.

The single most important graphic element on your Web site or blog is, without a doubt, your header graphic.

If your site lacks an eye-catching, targeted and topic-specific header graphic, it runs the risk of being ignored by untold numbers of potential clients and readers. But an attention-grabbing, well-designed header graphic does three things that are absolutely essential for your site to survive and thrive:

1. It lets people know what your site is about instantaneously.

Congratulations, someone has visited your Web site! Now, whether he stays to look around or immediately hits the back button to escape depends largely on your header graphic.

Your header graphic is the first page element your site visitors will see when they arrive at your Web site or blog. An effective header graphic assures site visitors that they have arrived at the correct destination and it confirms that your content or product is exactly what they are looking for.

If your header does not clearly communicate your site’s topic, visitors will leave in search of another site that fulfills their needs and expectations better.

2. It distinguishes your site as professional and authoritative.

Your Web site or blog visitors must trust your expertise, whether you sell a product or relay information, in order for your site to be successful.

A sloppy, fuzzy, boring or poorly designed header graphic indicates amateur site management and will earn you the skepticism of everyone who sees it. A polished, error-free header graphic with clear images, sharp fonts and site-specific art, however, will earn your visitors’ trust because it lends credibility and sophistication to your site.

If your site design looks professional, visitors will expect that you are, too.

3. It brands your site with a unique identity.

Identity recognition is everything when it comes to building a successful business or personal reputation. You want your site visitors to be able to recognize your site next week, next month and next year, even if they only visited it once before.

A strong, unique header graphic combined with a positive user experience at your Web site or blog will ensure that your site visitors never confuse you with someone else. If your header graphic is doing its job, your site will stand out from the crowd and convey the message that visitors can count on you for products, services and information they won’t find anywhere else.

How you can create excellent quality header graphics for your website or blog:

Easily

Cheaply

Quickly

Translate web pages easily with Google Chrome browser.

Recently Google have released a translation tool which is built into their Chrome web browser, and which works automatically. This feature is currently only available in the Beta or Dev version.

Google Chrome has 3 ‘varieties’: Stable, Beta and Dev Channel.

I have been using the Dev Channel for a long time, however I do not recommend this for users in general. Stick with the Beta or Stable releases. (Tech note: Started on Vista 32 Bit. Now on Windows 7 64 Bit. Had problems way back, last year, with the early versions on Dev Branch and had to revert to Beta. Have not had issues with Dev Branch for at least 9 months, maybe more.)

The Stable/Beta terminology does not mean that your install of Google Chrome will be unstable (see my tech note above), though it might be. You are more likely to have problems on the Dev branch though.

This morning I noticed a new Twitter follower, who has a page in German. Google Chrome instantly recognized the language (handy for when you cannot identify the language) and a toolbar automatically appeared which gave me the option of translation:

After clicking the translate button:

I can now read the page easily and quickly.

In the past, I translated web pages using the Google Translate page here.

To make life easier for visitors to my blog and website I installed a special Google Translate tool – here are more details:

Blog: http://joywizard.com/2009/05/17/translate-pages-into-your-preferred-language

Website: http://www.joywizard.net/Translate.html

The translation widget appears on the right of the blog and at the bottom of the website.

If you own a blog or website then I suggest you consider installing the Google Translate tool. You can get it here. Why make life hard for your readers, many of whom will not have English (or your language) as their first, native tongue? Make it as easy as possible and maximize readership. Don’t make them think too hard.
