Sir David warns of:

“perfect storm of population growth, climate change and peak oil production’, leading to ‘insecurity in the supply of food, water and energy”.

Personally, I agree with what Sir David is saying. In fact, I have been concerned about this issue for over 20 years, though have not discussed it much, especially in the early years; partly due to a sense of taboo. It was one key reason I emigrated from the United Kingdom to Australia in the late northern winter of early1997.

I particularly like to strip an issue down to its basic raw logic, regardless of my opinion, and then embrace the objective truth I find. One reason for this is that I have no wish to be a fool. I want my head to be clear and full of truth; not clogged with lies I am telling myself. In this instance I think along these lines:

• Resources on earth are finite.
• Population growth will increase pressure on, and demand for, increasingly scarce resources.
• The human race is not known for genuinely peaceful tendencies.
• We have a strong biological instinct for self-preservation.
• When it comes to the crunch, the majority of us will not be peaceniks – biological and other urges will kick in.
• The animal kingdom is very competitive. Fights/wars over food and other resources are common place, both within species and with others.
• We are arrogant and have hugely over estimated our importance. In 100 years the vast majority of us here now will be forgotten. Who remembers the ant that was crushed beneath the boot of a Roman soldier in Britannia in the year 88 AD? Only God – the divine/cosmos etc, and of course light*. (*If you were far enough away from earth, and had a powerful enough telescope, you would see the Romans wandering about because of the nature of light travel).
• Nature and biology WILL correct over population. It’s just a question of when, and how. The natural law will work, regardless of whether we believe in it or not.
• The strongest, fittest and the cleverest thinkers will survive. Politically incorrect maybe but nature is not full of vile PC crap. Another name for it is natural selection. Get over it. (More on political correctness).
• Many religions vastly over emphasise the importance of mankind. Some minimise the importance of animals. These religions are not balanced, nor are they the original spirituality of the human race (which is Shamanism).
• One day, they could be coming for you, your resources and your food. And it won’t be in peace. It’s biology. I will survive. Will you?

Do you back up your computer?

Have you seriously thought about what would happen if you do not have a reliable backup of your computer data?

Stress, anxiety, disruption to your life and perhaps business, downtime, loss of cherished memories and so on are just some of the effects when people do not have a computer data backed up properly.

Many people do not back up their data properly. Some do not do it at all. Others just partially.

Why is this?

A key reason for poor computer backup practices is the hassle involved. The time taken, the effort required and the sheer logistics of it. This is why I prefer to backup my computer the easy way.

So, what is the easy way to backup your computer?

I have been using this method for years now, probably around 10 years. I clone my computer.

Note the use of the word clone. Cloning means to make a perfect copy of your computer hard drive. A clone is not an image or some other form of fancy copy; it is simply an exact replica of what is on your hard drive.

When you have a cloned copy of your hard drive on an external hard drive it means that you have a detachable, separate backup of your computer system.

If you ever need to look at files on that drive, all you need to do is connect the external drive to any computer.

Should you need to restore your computer system for any reason, with a clone it is remarkably easy – all you do is install a fresh copy of Windows on your computer, then install a copy of the software you used to clone your backup drive. Next, you connect the backup drive to the computer and instruct the back up software to copy everything on your external hard drive to the computer. After this process, once you restart the computer, you will find that all your programs, data, settings and other personalizations are exactly the same as they were when you did the back up.

The best policy is to have a least three backup external drives. What I do is backup once a day, alternating between two drives, and then once a week to a third drive which is stored off site. This means that if one day I have a severe Windows corruption, not only do I have the previous nights backup, but the one from the night before as well as a copy that is between a day and seven days old off site. Having an off site backup is crucial because if any disaster happened at your premises where you keep your computer, your backup should be safe at another address. You would then just claim on your insurance for a new computer, or simply purchase one, and then either clone back your data (if the new computer is the same hardware configuration as the old one) or move it back manually. What is the point for example, of having your backup situated at the same address as your computer and getting them both stolen or burnt in a fire?

After long experience, I’ve found the best ‘cloning software’ program to be Acronis True Image Home.

I use the Samsung range of external hard drives (Story Station). Mine are USB three, however USB two drives are adequate. Bear in mind that a USB three capable computer connected to a USB three external hard drive will back up your data much faster than any USB two configuration.

Over the years, I have lived in many tourist destinations and have therefore been able to see things from both the perspective of the local and tourist. In fact, at times, I have done the tourist bit myself within my own neighbourhood. I have noticed how tourists tend to get a lower grade experience than people with local knowledge. These lower grade experiences extend across the economic spectrum as well as the full range of activities.

This problem is partly a mindset thing – think ‘tourists looking for the package deal and the package trip, cramming in all the touristy things’. The other part of the problem is the lack of local knowledge.

Back in the ‘old days’ before the advent of the Internet, one of the ways I got around this problem when I was travelling, was to stay in more localised and personal accommodation such as bed and breakfasts, and on occasion private homes. This way I got a more personal service, and access to the local knowledge base which not only saved me money but enabled me to have a more memorable experience.

Today things are much easier, thanks to the Internet. Usually, before a trip people plan what they are going to do and secure bookings, often a long time before the travel takes place. Here lies your opportunity.

Once you have decided where you are going to travel, how long you will stay and have a general idea of what you would like to do and see, I suggest that you begin to cultivate local contacts via the Internet. All being well, you might be able to make some friends in the area you are travelling to. By that, I do not necessarily mean low-key friends such as some connections on social media – you may find that some of your contacts develop into meaningful friendships. Just imagine; how much nicer it would be to be collected at the airport by some local people rather than having to struggle with taxis, buses or the strange language on the timetables!

Even if you don’t meet any of these localised friends upon arrival, you will at the very least have been able to gather some fantastic tips about how to make the most of your stay. So, the next time you travel, don’t forget to go local!

Here on the Gold Coast we have lots of restaurants and other eateries. It’s a popular place with international tourists, interstate visitors and others from within Queensland.

Not all are good to eat at.

I know a chef: Myles Brett.  I have known him for some years now. He has high ethics, is good to work with, works well under pressure and does a good job. Due to the general nature of the cooking profession here on the Gold Coast he tends to work on a casual basis, i.e. non permanent staff.

Recently he told me about a place (small chain, which shall remain anonymous) where he brought weevils in the breadcrumbs to the attention of the head chef. Myles had already thrown the breadcrumbs out for obvious reasons, including health and safety. The head chef did not like what Myles had done and stated that the breadcrumbs could have been sieved to remove the weevils.

Myles was never rostered back on to work after that, effectively losing his job we suspect for being honest and concerned about his customers – you, the dining public.

Things are quiet here on the Gold Coast currently, so it is harder than normal for Myles to get work – he has been looking for 2 weeks now. If you want an honest, hard working, friendly and competent Chef, please get in touch with Myles – his resume and contact details are here on his website.

Obviously, if you’re the sort of person who wants to take risks with your client’s health and safety then you won’t be calling Myles. The public on the other hand will wish you did.

You see, I wanted to buy some Ethical Nutrients Sleep Enhance Tab X 60. I have them occasionally, usually at weekends, to give my deep mind a change (different type of rest) as I sleep. My mind is very clear and active, albeit calmly, however on occasion I like the different type of rested feel I have after using the natural pills.

Normally, I buy these pills online. As I did not need to buy much from the online website I got them from last, I decided to get the pills at a local store – Chemist Warehouse Southport – about which I had the impression I would get reasonably good value. Having long used online suppliers for most of my chemist/pharmacy type needs (from as long ago as 1997) I am well aware of the large savings one can make by buying online. The savings more than compensate for the cost of shipping and the time wasted walking round shops (how much is your time worth?).

I had forgotten how much I last paid for the pills but had a quick look after I returned home. You see, I kind of trusted the local store to be reasonably priced. Did I get a shock!

And here…is a copy of my receipt from Chemist Warehouse, Southport. You will see the price of $23.99 – in excess of $9 more expensive! You will also note the comment on the receipt stating normal price of $27.95. I recall that the shelf had a ticket on it drawing attention to the reduced price of $23.99.

I leave you to decide whether the comment on the bottom of the receipt about whether they are Australia’s cheapest chemist is correct.

Good morning Prime Minister,

I hope you have a fantastic day – no doubt it will be much better than those of Australian sheep and cattle exported live to the Middle East.

For some time now, I have been monitoring the cruel events over there.

One concern I have, and it is just one, is that Australians are guilty by association and financial benefit, of the appalling cruelty to animals that results from live export.

Australia is nominally a Christian nation. To tolerate such an abuse of animals when we can not only stop OUR involvement, but set a shining example to the rest of the world, indicates that we as a nation are clearly not Christian in practice.

Please do all you can to stop the participation of, and benefit by, Australian people – business people, farmers, their children and so on in this vile live export.

Australians Benefiting From Cruel Live Export To Middle East is a post from: Joy Wizard Blog

Here on Queensland’s Gold Coast, we have Australian Magpies (they look different to the ones I grew up with in England – European Magpie).

Some wild Magpies become tame enough to eat out of your hand – this is relatively common. Vincent (a name I chose to give him) however is decidedly different. He is so cocky and determined that he will take food from a cat – head on. Watch and see.

We have not seen Vincent, nor any other Magpie for over a month now. This is normal. We have gone months without Magpies in the garden. Regulars are Crows, House Sparrows, Doves and what I think are Minahs. We get occasional parrots and some other birds.

Vincent’s visits were moving and an honor – being trusted so much by a wild bird is a nice feeling.

We did not invite Vincent inside. In this sub tropical climate we have the door open during summer.
