Business networking – a better way

Do you attend business networking events such as Business Breakfasts? So called ‘social networking‘ events?

Do you have trouble keeping up the momentum?

Do you need lots of coffee (read caffeine) to make those 7am starts and keep going?

Perhaps you should consider a different way……

Here’s how you can build better business relationships more easily.

Personally I take the view that it is better to work with ‘natural life flow’, than against it.

Just some examples:

Early morning meetings can go against the body (hence coffee desire) and the mind (think preoccupation with day ahead).

A business meeting? Is that what you really need?

A social meeting (of business people) is perhaps better – get to know people socially – like people – make friends – build rapport – build trust – relaxed atmosphere – enjoy. Results will include long-term trusting business relationships. But hey, we did not have a ‘starched’ business meetup. So what.

Why make life hard?

Next time you decide to do some business networking, consider arranging something which builds on relationships in a relaxed environment.

And remember to look for opportunities to work with ‘natural life flow’ in all aspects of life. Work with the powers/laws of nature, psychology, philosophy, human nature. Study them.

Recently renewed an Australian domain name for $23.95 over 2 years.

Recently I renewed an Australian domain name for another 2 years.

The process was easy and efficient because I am with VentraIP.

AUD $23.95 for 2 years is good value.

Have you checked what you are paying for your domain names? And for the renewals? You might get a nasty shock.

Do you have a system in place to ensure that you do not lose a domain name because you forgot to renew?

Do you really own your own domain name? I say this because some companies will arrange a domain name for you, yet keep it in their name. This can happen with smaller service providers, including . Beware!

Domain names are virtual real estate and should be treated as such.

Beware of those domain renewal letters which state that they are not a bill, yet which can easily be mistaken for one and are not sent from your current domain registrar. I get a number of these each year, offering to renew my domain for a set price. The price has always been much higher than what I am currently paying and involves a change of domain registrar. The letters do not come from my current domain registrars.

Changing a domain registrar as a result of paying one of these ‘bills’/letters may result in downtime for your website too, if the new registrar does not leave your name servers as they are.

Watch out for a staff member paying one of these letters on your behalf, not realizing what is happening. These letters are not necessarily illegal, or fraudulent, (the ones I have seen aren’t) and are careful to state that they are not a bill. The letters are well crafted psychologically however, and being a numbers game, are probably quite worthwhile for the senders. Busy people can easily mistake the letters for something from their own registrar. This is more likely because due to the infrequent nature of domain renewals, many people cannot easily recall who their domain registrar is.

Going for the cheapest domain name cost, or renewal rate is not a good policy. What you need is good value – a mix of reasonable price combined with quality service.

I use VentraIP for Australian domain names. For other domains, such as .com, .net and so on I use GoDaddy.

Added Google Adsense Today

Today I added Google Adsense to my blog and website .

I have somewhat mixed feelings; on the one hand I like the look without ads, on the other, Google Adsense:

Provides an income.
Gives visitors more variety and interest. I know some Internet marketing ‘purists’ might say never to do things which may draw people away from your website/blog; however I am more focused on user experience and usefulness to my visitors. Some of these ads may help people, especially if the ads are related to my content.

Personally, I often find Google ads to be interesting and keep them enabled in my Gmail/Google Apps email for example. At times I come across something very useful indeed.

Another positive aspect about Google Adsense ads is that I learn things from the way they are constructed – about marketing (another expression for marketing is ‘conveying a message’) and communication.

I realize that some people do not like to see ads. I apologize to them/you; however I cannot please everyone, in every way, all of the time.

The ads also appear in my blog RSS feed.

Slacking Off – Goofing Off – Statistics and a bonus tip about employee sick leave.

Slacking off, goofing off by employees is a huge cost to business and government.

That said, a limited amount of slacking on the job can improve output, productivity and quality of work performed. Some cyber slacking can even be helpful.

The essence of/reason for slacking is usually a lack of deep, intense interest in what we are doing.

Think about the last time you were doing something and the time flew so fast you wondered where it had gone. One of the reasons for this is that whatever you were doing held your interest – deeply. In fact, you may have had what is known as an altered state of consciousness (ASC); which is why you didn’t notice the time flying by.

It is important for employees to find out what they love doing work-wise – and to do it. Find your purpose. If need be, change your job; but make sure you find out what you want in your deepest heart.

It is important for employers to make work as interesting and engaging as possible. Some of this can be achieved by empowering employee creativity and responsibility.

PS: here’s a quick tip for employers concerning sick leave. Try looking at which day of the week employees take off sick over the course of a year. Some sneaky employees slip beneath the radar by having occasional days off sick and remain below their sickie allowance for the year (perhaps 8 days). When you analyze which days they took off as sick leave you may notice the days were all, or mostly, one particular day of the week. If so, this can reveal a hidden slacking off problem. (E.g. is someone always sick on a Wednesday and is this normal? Likely not.) Like many things in life, analyzing data/intelligence properly can reveal interesting situations.

Why I like postal letterbox junk mail and Google ads!

These days we often hear people complaining about junk mail in their letterbox and Google ads. In fact, the lack of ads is listed as a benefit for some types of online services when you take up the paid version. To me, the removal of the ads is actually a negative! My ideal is to be able to show or hide them at will, should I be signed up to a service that hides the ads for a paid version.

Why is this so?

Aside from the more obvious informative nature of Google ads and postal junk mail; which I actually find very helpful and useful at times, a key point which is often missed, is that in some cases people have paid a very large sum of money to have the adverts designed. As such, Google ads, and especially some postal junk mail, are an educational tool that have been produced at considerable expense by someone else. Over the years, I have learnt a great deal about marketing from studying such material. And it all arrives in my letter box free of charge!

As a modern Internet marketer, I also find being able to view the Google ads very informative from that perspective too. For my own domain based e-mail I use Google Apps, which in simple terms is very similar to Gmail – users will be familiar with the adverts that appear off to the right hand side and many have probably noticed how the nature of the ads can be influenced by the words in the text of the e-mail. There is also a little bar across the top which shows a different website every now and again, though I am not sure what parameters it uses to determine which website to show.

Postal junk mail has also been a rich source of leads for potential customers too. This is especially pertinent because by definition of being a sender of postal junk mail, they are clearly very interested in marketing. Because I help businesses with their marketing as one of my services I am in effect receiving a shortlist of people who are very interested in marketing, have a marketing budget to spend and are currently active with their efforts to gain new custom.

So, instead of moaning about junk mail or Google ads, I see them as a rich resource of information and education from a number of perspectives. Much better I think than sticking with the status quo and having a good old negative moan! Dare I say even a sanctimonious moan!

Personally I am a bit of a ‘Geek’, or ‘Nerd’ and tend to operate out on the ‘frontier’ of new developments. This does not mean that I grab the latest gadget, or follow fads though. For example; I could have obtained an iPhone long before they were released in Australia officially – I did not bother. Nor did I join the queues when the iPhone was released.

Some years ago I predicted that one day, small notebooks would be common, coupled with always on wireless Internet. Now we are starting to see Netbooks appear in significant numbers, in conjunction with increased use of mobile Internet. I remember the days before Telstra mobile Internet; back when iBurst came on the scene. I was one of the first users of iBurst in Australia. Simply speaking, iBurst was like the mobile wireless Internet that we know today, however it used a different technology. I will never forget driving my daughter home from school while she was on MSN and chatting to her friends – this may have been as long ago as 2002, 2003 or 2004.

Newspapers are in my view well on the way to obsolescence. I stopped reading them years ago. Online news is SO much better than the history which appears in print news. Frankly, the term ‘newspaper’ is a misnomer – they should be called ‘history papers’.

I remember using VOIP back in the 90′s to phone a girlfriend in the USA. I knew it would change telecoms big time. Today, more and more people are embracing VOIP. I am for example on an older Skype plan where I pay just $3 Australian per month and get long distance (STD) phone calls for just a connection fee of around 6c with no time limit! Anyone aware of the horrendous long distance (STD) charges Telstra imposed will realize what a refreshing change this is!

I used Internet banking way back in the 90′s too – back when my bank had software on my PC to enable it. Internet banking has been browser based for years.

I met my wife online in the 90′s as well. Fortunately she thinks I am a cool, touchy feely nerd! Many people scoffed at my online dating efforts back then.

So, am I some sort of ‘clever dick’ or ‘smart alec’?

No, definitely not.

It is actually not difficult to predict stuff when you understand human nature and how people tick.

We want convenience, good value, ease of use, freedom and slick services.

If you are in business and: make things hard for customers…..try and lock them up with longggggg contracts…..try to get your customers to fulfill your bureaucracy/ red tape fetish and so on, then you will find they start going elsewhere.

We will NOT be inconvenienced and hindered by third rate business practices. You WILL be fired.

Online invoicing – a breath of fresh air.

Earlier this year I was a little overrun with administrative and other reorganisation/planning, which included a business development efficiency drive.

My efficiency audits included researching and evaluating invoicing and accounting methods; which are an important part of running any business. Hopefully my research and experiences will help some of you.

Up until earlier this year, I had been using a combination of MYOB Business Basics, Word, PDF conversion from Word, My Documents, calculator, email and a printer!

My old procedure:

Create invoice using pre-formatted Word invoice. Took care not to ‘upset’ the format. Had to calculate GST (tax) manually and type in.
Saved Word document as PDF.
Printed invoice.
Emailed to client.
Used printed invoice as prompt to enter data into MYOB Business Basics.

Yawn….what a drag! With plenty of scope for missing a step, or messing up.

As you can imagine, this took way too long – usually about 7-10 minutes per invoice.

Despite being a highly motivated person, this method felt like trying to sail a boat with an anchor dragging.

Then I discovered Freshbooks.

Freshbooks is in my view one of the best of breed, having done considerable research. (This type of research is worthwhile because it saves one lots of hassle and time wasting down the track).

Now I can create and send an invoice in less than 30 seconds!

My client gets an email containing a special link which takes them to a special part of the Freshbooks website reserved just for them (and me). There they can view my invoice, print it off or download as a PDF. There is even a link where clients can pay by PayPal; and in that case, Freshbooks automatically records the invoice as paid!

I have never been keen on accounting partly because my father tried to force me into the profession when I was young. I have not allocated time to ‘heal’ myself of this aspect of my past because it is not important enough. With Freshbooks however, I now enjoy doing my invoicing. They have turned it into fun!
