How to help your cat live longer.
Cats are to many people valued companions, others substitute children, and still others something between a household fixture and a “standard pet”, or even working animal.
If you are interested in helping your cat live a longer and better life, then obtaining key accurate information is very important. Vets are of course a good source of knowledge, however it can sometimes be difficult to remember everything they said when you and your cat were at the last consultation. (You do take your cat to the vet for regular checkups and vaccinations don’t you?) Not all vets are thorough enough however and you may receive poor or inadequate advice. Some vets will try to maximize revenue and suggest unnecessary services or products.
There are other sources of advice on cat care – books, the Internet, and some Cat clubs are examples. As with human health however, it is important to be cautious when assessing information, especially online.
I have recently come across a helpful website which can assist you get a general idea of what your cat’s real age is and which will help your cat enjoy a younger, healthier life.
Based on your cat’s health, risk of disease, and behavior, the CatAge Test calculates your cat’s biological age in people years.
I completed the test for both of my cats and received very good results – one is 14.5 years younger than the average cat age for her breed, and the other is 12.1 years younger.
Upon completion of the tests I received some helpful advice and could see how comprehensive and useful the test is, especially for people who don’t have such an extensive knowledge of cat care as I do. It can also provide a useful checklist of issues to discuss specifically with your vet.
Here is the link to the Cat Age website.
