Learning about business from smart people.

| January 1, 2009 | 0 Comments

I like smart people. I can learn so much from them. It makes my life easier – cruisier.

Too many people like to try and pull others down a peg or two. Here in Australia we have what is called the “tall poppy syndrome“. It is a shame, and very counter productive. It can even increase the brain drain effect.

Michael Dell, the Dounder of the Dell computer company says:

Customer requirements are increasingly being defined by how they use technology rather than where they use it.

In context of:

“We have laid the foundation for the transition from a global business that’s run regionally to businesses that are really globally organized.”

Michael Dell is clearly a smart, clever fellow. His comment about customer requirements is critical. There will always be a significant geographical factor in some markets, however with the increasing trend of online shopping geography is less important. If Dell is taking this approach, then perhaps it might be a good idea for you to look at your business in this manner too so as to determine if it applies to you and your customers. What opportunites present themselves?

On the subject of pulling people down, over the years I have noted how common it is for people to complain about Microsoft in an excessive and inappropriate manner. All sorts of moans are evident. Obviously, some constructive criticism is justified, however the essence of the issue is that Microsoft opened up computing for the masses. Microsoft made things easier for people around the world. As a result, whole new industries were born. Whole new ways of doing all kinds of stuff. In 100 years time, school kids will learn about the”Internet and Computing Revolution” that began in the latter half of the 20th century and Microsoft will be recorded as having had a huge part to play. It will be like learning about the Agrarian and Industrial Revolutions.

Personally, I am very grateful to Microsoft and the opportunities it has provided. I have better things to do than spend my time moaning about them. Sure, some of their products are not top notch, or not as good as they were, however the big picture concerning Microsoft and what they have achieved is good. Are you a big picture person or are you glued to the little screen?
