John Denver's wisdom – Ageing

| December 16, 2008 | 0 Comments

“To grow old it is to change, to change is to be new, and to be new is to be young again.”

Those words come from one of John Denver’s songs.

Clearly, growing old involves a number of changes. Unfortunately, many people only focus on the physical aspects of growing old and allow themselves to also grow old emotionally and mentally.

Many people do not realise that it is possible to change emotionally or mentally. Others simply do not want to change. And society in general does not help because it is rare for people to change significantly. Why should we expect to be any different? No doubt you will recall the times when you have come across someone that you knew from years ago who has not changed much mentally or emotionally.

Changes in our lives can bring new ideas, fresh and exciting challenges and even added hope to life itself. I’m in my mid-40s today and while my body has slowed down somewhat, my mind has speeded up and feels much fresher and younger than it has ever been.

One reason for this is that I cultivate my mind in a positive and helpful way. I keep it busy with the right things and I’m certainly no “stick in the mud”. At times I joke about slowly turning into an “old fart”, however that is just part of my sense of humor and I have no intention of doing so!

What about you? Take some time today and think about how you can let the changes in your life allow you to feel young again. If you are young and reading this, then I suggest that you make the most of every day and value your time. As you get older you might appreciate on an increasing basis how valuable time is. I said “might” because not everybody does – try to avoid becoming one of them.
